Use These Tips To Maintain Your Fence Year Round

Use These Tips To Maintain Your Fence Year Round

Once you invest in a fence for your yard, you want it to last for years to come. This is one of the reasons why Frame It All's composite fencing, made from a combination of natural fibers and recycled wood and bonded with plastic, is so popular. But even a composite fence needs some care and attention. Use this guide to maintain your fence year-round.

General Fence Maintenance Tips

You'll want to inspect your fence regularly for any damage. Check out the posts to make sure they're secure, and identify any loose boards. Also, make sure to trim any grass or plants growing into your fence, as they can damage it over time.

Seasonal Maintenance Checklist

Follow this seasonal maintenance checklist to keep your fence looking great.

Spring:

  • Clean your composite fence using a mild soap solution and soft brush, and rinse with the garden hose. You can use a pressure washer to clean wooden or vinyl fences.
  • Inspect for winter damage, checking for cracks, rot, rust or loose fasteners caused by frost or snow. A composite fence should stand up to most winter conditions, but you might find some damage to your wood or vinyl fence that needs to be repaired.
  • Repair minor issues. Fix loose nails, hinges or screws, and repair damaged panels or posts. You may be able to rely on the manufacturer for repairs if your fence is under warranty.

Summer:

  • Prevent sun damage by staining or painting wooden fences to protect from ultraviolet rays. Apply a sealant to composite fences as necessary.
  • Check for pests. Look for termite activity in wooden fences. Treat with pest deterrents as necessary.
  • Prune vines or shrubs growing on or near the fence.

Fall:

  • Prepare for winter by tightening any screws and fasteners to secure your fence against strong winds. Also, remove debris that can cause moisture buildup. For example, fallen leaves can rot wooden fences if left to build up near them.
  • Conduct another cleaning to remove summer dirt, pollen and mildew.
  • Check the gate to ensure it swings properly and the hinges are oiled.

Winter:

  • Prevent snow damage by removing any snow that's piled up against the fence. Use a broom to remove any snow buildup.
  • Inspect your fence after winter storms. Check for leaning posts or sagging panels.
  • Protect metal fences with a rust inhibitor or touch up paint on any exposed areas.
  • Avoid using salt or harsh chemicals near your vinyl or wood fence, as it can damage the finish.

Fence-Specific Maintenance

Depending on the type of fence you own, you'll need some additional maintenance tips, as follows.

Wooden fences:

  • Apply a water-repellent stain or paint every one to three years.
  • Sand rough areas to prevent splinters.
  • Look for rot, especially near the base of posts.

Vinyl fences:

  • Vinyl fences can be prone to mold and staining, so be sure to clean your vinyl fence thoroughly at least once a year.
  • Avoid leaning heavy objects against the fence. Otherwise, it may warp.

Composite fences:

  • Regularly clean with a soft brush or cloth to maintain the finish. Rinse gently with a hose.
  • Inspect the fence for scratches or chips and follow manufacturer care guidelines.

Metal fences:

  • Remove rust spots with sandpaper. Then repaint if necessary.
  • Lubricate hinges and latches to prevent squeaking or sticking.
